Bard Port not flushed in 3 years, dangerous?

10/10/2008

Question:

I had a Bard port inserted under the skin of my chest with the catheter going over my collarbone and into the vein in my neck. I had chemo treatment for 4 months that year and some subsequent follow-up testing using the port. The port has not been used or flushed since then. It`s about 3 years now. Should I have been getting it flushed monthly for safety purposes? I don`t think I`ll be needing it again and want to have it removed. Are there risks the surgeon or I should think about with the unused port not being flushed in so long?

Answer:

The port should be removed now as it is not being maintained and there are no future plans to use it.
