Athletic Training

Safe age for weight lifting

09/24/2008 12:39PM

Question:

Weight is a safe age for a boy to start weight lifting?

Answer:

Most experts recommend waiting until a child reaches the age range of 13-16 years to begin a formal weight training program.  It is important to be sure the child's biological development matches his or her chronological age.

Until then, there are many great exercises and activites that utilize body weight, bands, med balls, etc. that are safe for younger children.  It is always prudent to consult your pediatrician before beginning any program.  Using a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) as a resource is also a good idea.
