Ear, Nose, and Throat Disorders

Could my tinnitus be a paralymph fistula?

08/19/2008 03:44PM

Question:

Hello,

My question is this: I have acquired a severe ringing in my ears due to a firearms incident 2.5 months ago. I did not experience any dizziness in specific, however, loud or high-pitched noises tend to irritate or "rattle" my ear, causing slight dizziness, and discomfort. I felt more comfortable when wearing ear plugs. The ringing was actually going away until I had to fly for work. I am now staying grounded as the ringing immedialty got worse. I still do not experience any serious dizziness, but am wondering if these symptoms could likely be attributed to a fistula of some kind?

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Answer:

I do not think that you have a perilymph fistula. However, you need to see an ear specialist and have an audiogram performed. You probably had an impulse noise (from the firearm) that has created the tinnitus (and hearing loss). You also have what is called hyperacusis (a sensitivity to sounds). This typically does improve with time. However, hearing aids, maskers, or other options may exist to treat your symptoms.
