Hypochromasia 1+ in child06/16/2008 08:11PM |
I am inquiring about a lab result on my two year old daughter that she had done dring a 12 day fever. The doctor was trying to rule out all possibilities causing fever and did a CBC, chest x-ray and urine cultures. I received a copy of the results and it says hypochromasia 1+. The doctor never mentioned this result. Her CBC was all normal except MPV was 6.8. Her HGB was 12.9, MCHC 34.1 Should I be concerned? Is it related to fever?
I am not a pediatric hematologist so I do not have any experience evaluating CBC results in 2 year old children. In an adult a note of 1+ hypochromasia would not be regarded as clinically significant. It is an observation by the instrument that some of the red blood cells look like they have a slightly less amount of hemoglobin than normal. The MCHC value is at the lower limit of normal and is a reflection of the average hemoglobin concentration of red cells. The Hgb is within the normal range. I cannot make comment about whether these findings are related to the child's fever.
