Healthy Mouth, Healthy Kids

how old should you be before putting on braces

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic screening before the age of seven, if the family dentist does not spot some problem at an earlier age. If a child has an under bite (lower jaw protrusion and/or upper jaw retrusion), that should warrant investigation at an earlier age. Cleft lip and/or cleft palate children need screening almost from birth so the range can be quite varied. An examination does not automatically mean appliances. Find out what the problem is, ask if it needs to be treated now or can the problem be corrected later, and what are the advantages and disadvantages of either approach.
