Mouth guards

10/28/2003 12:04PM

Question:

My son is in junior high school and is going to play basketball. I have noticed at the college and pro level that most players where mouth guards. Should I purchase a mouth guard for my son and if so what should I look for? He currently has braces if that makes a difference.

Answer:

Mouth guards are ESSENTIAL. Various kinds exist, both custom-made and "over the counter". Over the counter versions are usually best if they are the "boil and bite" kind that conform to the teeth more accurately, even with braces. However, if not used just so, the braces could be harmed. These kinds are reasonably priced. If this concerns you, try the pre-fab kind that just slip over the teeth. Although not as effective for evenly distributing forces from a blow to the face, they are easy to wear with braces. These are the least expensive kind. Best of all is for the dentist to make one from an impression and model of your son`s teeth and mouth. But this is the most expensive method also.
