Pollen

Question:

Why do pollen allergies make you feel so rotten? Like getting hit by a freight train?

Answer:

People with allergies are genetically predisposed to producing allergic antibodies (called IgE) to different allergens (for example pollen). When they are exposed to pollen, this activates a series of chemical and cellular reactions that results in the release of histamine that can cause severe itching, sneezing and runny nose.

This is why we use anti-histamines to block this response. Also useful are nasal corticosteroid sprays. Seasonal allergies can be effectively controlled so you don`t feel like a freight train has hit you if they are treated properly. I recommend you see an allergist who can properly diagnose and treat you so in the future you aren`t so miserable.
