Athletic Training

Acclimation to heat

06/23/2003 06:40PM

Question:

I am planning on running a 5k race at the end of July, I am physically fit and ready for the race but I train indoors and am not acclimated to the hot and humid weather. How long before the race should I start to acclimate myself to the weather?

Answer:

You should probably begin the acclimation process now. The best time to run outdoors would be early morning or late evening. Once you are used to training at those times, switch to train during the time of day in which the race will be held. It is important to remember to drink plenty of water to remain hydrated. As always, consult your physician before any changes in exercise regimen.
