Vitamin c and the Common Cold05/23/2001 08:00AM |
Can you please tell me the effects that vitamin c has on the common cold?
Thanks for your question. Vitamin C has previously been touted as a `cure` for the common cold, though this has never been proven. Vitamin C is needed for a strong immune system, but deficiencies are unlikely in the US. In addition, even people with “healthy” immune systems are highly susceptible to colds if they are exposed to the cold virus. Your best bet in preventing colds is to avoid sick people, wash your hands frequently and avoid hand-eye contact and hand-nose contact.
