Sweat: good or bad?

04/26/2001 12:15AM

Question:

Can sweating too much be a health hazard? and if so what can be done about it?

Answer:

With the hot summer months we are dealing with, this is a great question. The body will perspire or sweat in response to keep itself cool when our internal temperature rises above 98 degrees. This cooling mechanism is vital during exercise to prevent heat illness such as muscle cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke; the latter can be life threatening. It is important to replace lost fluids from our body through sweat. Water and electrolyte drinks such as Gatorade and Poweraid are good options. If we don`t replace lost fluids, we suffer from dehydration which can affect our overall heath status.

Some people suffer from a condition where they sweat without exercise, this is called hypohydrosis. This condition can be controlled through medication and even some electro-stimulation. If this is the case, your physician can direct your care.
