Dental and Oral Health (Children)

Are tooth sealants recommended for children?

02/02/2001 03:32PM

Question:

Do you recommend the use of tooth sealants in young children? If so, do you suggest using them on permanent teeth, only?

Thank you.

Answer:

Dental sealants have been proven to prevent decay in the deep pits and fissures on the biting surfaces of children`s back teeth (molars). They are most commonly indicated for permanent teeth but sealing primary (baby) teeth can be cost effective in some cases. Your child`s dentist will consider the risk of future cavities when he or she considers using dental sealants.
