Allergies

Referring an allergic child to the MD

11/06/2000 08:33AM

Question:

When should a child with seasonal allergies see their physician? What about an allergist?

Answer:

If the seasonal symptoms occur for more than 4-6 months out of the year for at least 2 consecutive years and are not controlled by medications, an allergist should be consulted to confirm sensitivity by skin testing to seasonal allergens (pollen, mold) or to other non-seasonal allergens (cats, dust mites) which may be contributing to the symptoms.

Because many of these children will also develop asthma, early asthma symptoms warrant evaluation by an allergist. If allergies are confirmed an allergist can offer: 1. useful environmental control information; 2. effective ways to adjust anti-allergic medications; or 3.allergen injections if indicated.
