COLUMBUS, Ohio [June 6, 2005] -- Imagine that you are 15 years old with a severe underbite. You want to fix the problem but aren't sure about surgery and its effects. Where do you turn for accurate medical advice?
One teenager approached NetWellness, a consumer health information site on the Internet. This became the service's 26,000th question answered by faculty from its partner universities.
NetWellness is a nonprofit service that provides high quality information created and evaluated by medical and health professional faculty. Its partner universities are The Ohio State University School of Public Health, the University of Cincinnati and Case Western Reserve University. Health care faculty from the three universities serve as experts in NetWellness' interactive "Ask an Expert" service.
Dr. Daniel E. Jolly, director of the general practice residency program at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, answered the 26,000th question, providing information on the surgery to fix an underbite. Dr. Jolly began answering questions for NetWellness in March of 2000.
"We are glad to provide public service through NetWellness as part of our mission as a public university," said Dr. Jolly. "It is a valuable service for individuals to find answers to health questions on general concerns from knowledgeable faculty sources in Ohio. Although it is not possible to provide a diagnosis in this kind of forum, every attempt is made to provide guidance to help people focus their search for the best treatment option so they can seek the most appropriate one-on-one evaluation and care."
NetWellness experts answer a combined 4,000 to 6,000 questions annually. The service answers all legitimate questions, usually within two or three days. Questions and answers are available for other visitors to browse or search. NetWellness adheres to a strict privacy policy. No personal information is collected or posted.
NetWellness has over 35,000 pages of information on many health topics.
