April is Minority Health Month
Established by the Ohio Commission
of Minority Health in April 1989, Minority Health Month is
designed to promote healthy living and disease prevention, as well
as to bring awareness to the health disparities that minorities
face.
April is also Cancer Control Month. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS),
Cancer Control Month aims to bring cancer control and prevention to
the forefront. An ACS report states that African Americans have the
highest cancer death rate of any racial or ethnic group in the
United States. In order to lower the mortality rate of African
Americans, we must be conscious of the health disparities that
minorities face.
