Department of the Month - Family Medicine

The Department of Family Medicine at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals of Cleveland has been successful in meeting and expanding on multiple missions of teaching, research, clinical care and scholarly pursuits.

The Case Department of Family Medicine is involved in all levels of medical education including medical student, resident and fellowship training. The department's residency program has nearly 200 graduates, many of whom are in major leadership positions nationally and internationally. The Case Department of Family Medicine is one of the premier research divisions in Family Medicine nationally. Investigators are advancing the science of primary care with research projects that include: cancer epidemiology and prevention, genetics and primary care, obesity prevention and treatment in minority women, and physician-patient communication. In keeping with their commitment to research, the department of family medicine is the editorial office home of the Annals of Family Medicine. In March 2005, the Department announced its new Division of Adolescent Health which will focus on a three fold mission of research, professional education and community collaboration.

The Department is also one of the largest medical groups providing primary care services in and around the University Circle area of Cleveland, Ohio. Family Medicine's joint faculty-resident office provides a model of care for patients from various socioeconomic backgrounds. Joining the Lung and Respiratory Diseases topic area are: Khalid Almoosa, MD, James Knepler, MD, Ralph Panos, MD, Steven Strausbaugh, MD, and Victoria Surdulescu, MD. Dr. Almoosa has a special interest in critical care medicine, Dr. Knepler is interested in general respiratory medicine, Dr. Panos research centers on interstitial lung disease, Dr. Strausbaugh's area of expertise is cystic fibrosis and Dr. Surdelescu works in the area of sleep disorders. All these physicians are members of the division of Pulmonary and Critical Care in the College of Medicine at the University of Cincinnati.
