Department of the Month - Human Nutrition

The Department of Human Nutrition at The Ohio State University is committed to its mission of generating, disseminating, and applying knowledge in the areas of human nutrition and dietetics in order to improve the quality of life for individuals, families, and associated organizational systems.

Through intensive research, scholarly discourse, and outreach, the department aspires to become a nationally and internationally recognized model for excellence in research, education, and service. Central to its goals is a strong commitment to learning and the development of new knowledge. To this end, the department encourages critical thinking among its students and faculty in an environment of mutual respect.

A primary goal of the Department of Human Nutrition is to provide opportunities for students to develop and apply knowledge, understanding and skills in the areas of human nutrition, dietetics, food and foodservice management. The department is committed to education for professionals in these fields and is unique in its overall orientation to food and nutrition related to humans and their environment.

Jaime Ackerman, MPH, RD, LD, and Sharron Coplin, MS, RD, LD are Extension Associates in the Department of Human Nutrition and answer questions for NetWellness in the areas of Diet and Nutrition and Obesity/Weight Management.

Nearly every day we see a report about the growing weight problems among Americans. At the same time, we see ads for super sized meals and all-you-can-eat buffets. What to do? The new article "Don't Be Fooled by Portion Distortion!" by Gail Kaye, PhD, MS, RD Program Director - Human Nutrition in the College of Human Ecology at The Ohio State University has some enlightening information for you.

New Expert in Infertility

NetWellness welcomes Daniel B. Williams, MD as a new expert in infertility. Dr. Williams is the director of the Center for Reproductive Health in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University Of Cincinnati College Of Medicine.

New Expert in Myasthenia Gravis

NetWellness also welcomes Robert W. Neel, MD as a new expert in Myasthenia Gravis. Dr. Neel has recently completed his neurology residency at the University of Cincinnati and is presently serving a Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship in Neuromuscular Diseases at the University of Cincinnati. He will join John G. Quinlan, MD, Associate Professor, in the Department of Neurology of the College of Medicine at the University of Cincinnati. NetWellness's experts in myasthenia gravis have answered over 1200 questions, making the site one of the deepest consumer resources on the topic.

Pre-anesthesia Online Interview

Gareth S. Kantor, MD, Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology of the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine has developed Pre-anesthesia Online Interview, an interactive interview for patients planning surgery. The interview will increase your knowledge of anesthesia so you can make better decisions about your care and be more confident about preparation for, and recovery from, anesthesia and surgery. The interview results in a summary that you can print and share with your surgeons or anesthesiologists. Dr. Kantor believes this is the first tool of its kind on the web.
