What's New on NetWellness – April 2002
April is Minority Health Month in Ohio. Did you know that African American men have a higher risk of prostate cancer than men of other races? In our feature find out more about prostate cancer as well as some practical health tips for African American men written by Robert I. Haynie, MD, PhD. Dr. Haynie is Associate Dean for Student Affairs at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He also holds the position of Medical Director of the Center for Urban Health as well as chief of the division of General Internal Medicine at CWRU. He has a particular interest in hypertension and has published several articles on this topic and is a member of the American Society of Hypertension, the National Minority Organ and Tissue Transplantation Education Program, and the High Blood Pressure Council of Greater Cleveland. Visit the NetWellness Minority Health Center for information on other diseases and conditions that are of great concern to African Americans.
Complementary and Alternative Medicine is an area that is mysterious and piques our curiosity. More and more, it is relevant to our daily health. The big question is always: are alternative treatments safe and effective compared to those offered by mainstream medical practice? Tanya I. Edwards, MD has joined NetWellness to provide expertise in the area of Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Dr. Edwards is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at Case Western Reserve University, where she is the coordinator of complementary and alternative medicine education. She is a frequent speaker and has also published on this topic.
Duane D. Culler, MS, has joined the Cancer Genetics area of NetWellness. Duane is a Genetic Associate at Case Western Reserve University. Mr. Culler is certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling. Oormila P. Kovilam, M.D., an Assistant Professor in the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Cincinnati, has joined the Diabetes and Pregnancy areas of NetWellness. In addition to board certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology Dr. Kovilam has a particular interest in diabetes in pregnancy.
Faculty of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati who practice at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center have served as NetWellness experts in a number of areas for many years. Cincinnati Children’s has developed two new excellent web resources for children’s health information. "Young and Healthy" is an online magazine that comes out four times a year providing information on the prevention and treatment of illnesses in children. "Your Child’s Health," a source for disease, and condition-specific, information is set up in an easy to use encyclopedic format. We continue to integrate the content from the ADAM Health Illustrated Encyclopedia into the NetWellness Health Topics. Don’t forget, the Health Illustrated Encyclopedia is available in its entirety – all 10,000 web pages, with thousands of illustrations and animations.
